Flipboard, the online site that lets people share their interests in a similar way to a blog, has just announced the creation of Flipboard China in collaboration with BlueFocus, the Chinese communication group. China is now one of Flipboard’s largest markets and the company hopes to grow further with the newly created entity.
Now, Flipboard China can hire talent, develop additional features and partner with local publishers and advertisers.
According to Flipboard US, it will continue to work together with the Chinese subsidiary for ad opportunities, global partnerships but also editorial and best practices.
However, Flipboard China will be creating its own technology and infrastructure which allows it to customise products for the Asian market. In addition, it can innovate mobile advertising opportunities specifically for the Chinese market.
Mike McCue, Founder and CEO, Flipboard, says:
“Partnered with BlueFocus, Flipboard is now ready to expand its premium advertising solutions to China while accelerating progress on a product experience tailored for the high-end Chinese market. We are excited to expand the already excellent team in Beijing and fully empower them to move fast.”
Jing Zhao, who is a current Beijing-based executive at the company has been promoted to CEO of Flipboard China. His team includes 25 engineers, marketers and business leads. The joint venture is being managed by a board that consists of Hugo Buret of Flipboard, Lucia He of BlueFocus and Mr. Zhao, representing Flipboard China.
Lucia He, Vice President at BlueFocus, adds:
“The partnership between BlueFocus and Flipboard will take advantage of the many advertising synergies between the two companies. The promising China market and the extensive partner network behind BlueFocus will pave the way for the expansion of Flipboard’s business and market positioning in the category of intelligent news platforms in China. We believe this will ultimately bring benefits to the joint venture as well as to Flipboard users.”
