Smaato, the real-time mobile advertising platform, has received a proposal for acquisition from Beijing-based Spearhead Integrated Marketing Communication Group. The deal worth $148m would go through an M&A fund by a fully-owned subsidiary.

Though subject to final agreement signing and approvals from each party’s decision making bodies, the deal highlights the strong growth of the mobile advertising economy and how Chinese marketing firms are fast emerging on the scene.
For Spearhead, the deal opens three key strategic areas including worldwide expansion through Smaato, global reach of 1bn unique mobile monthly users outside of China, and an acceleration of its mobile ad capabilities through the integration of Smaato.
Indeed, Smaato does come with a real-time mobile ad technology SPX Publisher platform on board that could be very useful for Spearhead.
For Smaato, the deal significantly accelerates the firm’s growth and pushes the company into China alongside an established partner. Smaato will gain access to a large number of mobile users in the country and grow its tech roadmap.
