Snap just recently rolled out its Spectacles in Europe, but the company is apparently already thinking about launching a second edition of the glasses which let owners take snapshots and shoot videos that can be posted to Snapchat.
The first edition Spectacles retailed at $129.99 in the US.
Sources recently told TechCrunch that the second edition glasses could be quite different, but few members of staff actually know about the product.
There is some speculation that the new version could ship with augmented reality (AR) functions, following an application for a patent for AR glasses reported by Mashable. The built-in AR feature would likely span a large range of the apps features including World Lenses, which add 3D filters to Snapchat user surroundings.
In addition, Snap may be getting ready to roll out AR helmets and AR visors as well as a Snapchat drone following the company’s acquisition of drone maker Ctrl Me Robotics.
Although Spectacles haven’t been contributing all that much to Snap Inc’s revenue just yet, AI features may boost overall sales. Indeed, AI and similar technologies are said to be the next big thing in mobile and social. It certainly has been one of the topics receiving major media attention over the last five years.
If the second edition glasses do feature AI capabilities, they could help boost the company’s profile and perhaps its bottom line in the long run.
